I have never been one for fancy dress parties but when my best friend called and said she was holding a party and we all had to come as a character from our favourite musical and I absolutely had to attend, I really felt I had no choice.
One of the reasons I didn’t like fancy dress parties was the thought of lots of people wearing the costume before me. I had hired costumes a couple of times and they always smelt mouldy and looked well worn. I made the decision that if I had to go (and I did), I would buy a new or make my own costume but first, I had to decide who I was going to go as.
I liked musicals but my favorite was the Blues Brothers. I decided to go as Elwood.
I got one of my husband’s old suits and asked a local tailor to take it in for me, as it was way too big for me in its’ current state.
Next, I had to buy some black loafers. In this regard I was lucky, I walked past a charity shop one day at lunchtime and I saw some black lace up shoes, they were ugly, but they fit me and they would look good with my outfit, with the added bonus that they didn’t cost much.
I visited my grandad, as I did every week and told him about the party. He said he had a hat I could borrow; he always got a bit chilly in the winter and had a few, so I could take my pick.
As luck would have it he had a black trilby that would be a perfect addition to my outfit. Actually, I liked it so much, I thought I would keep it to wear in the colder months.
The last thing I had yet to buy were sunglasses. I knew absolutely nothing about these, so had no clue what to buy. I decided to enlist the help of the internet and looked at lots of reviews and it was there I found a wide selection of Sunglass picks and found the perfect pair of Ray Bans.
I was happy to pay a premium for these, as I knew I would wear them after the party was over.
My outfit was ready. I just needed to give myself some stubble and an attitude and I was ready for the party.
The day of the party had come and I was proud of my outfit. It looked great.
The party was amazing. My friend had set up a karaoke stage, so everyone could sing as their character. It was a great party. I sang a few songs and danced for hours.
Who knew, a fancy dress party could be enjoyable. I might hold one of my own in the future.
